2023 Collegiate Design Series: Formula Hybrid + Electric Competition
For 2023, SAE’s Collegiate Design Series will continue to include the Formula Hybrid + Electric competition hosted in early May at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH.
Teams compete in either the Hybrid or Battery Electric class and are eligible to compete in other Formula SAE competitions. Registration fees will see an increase to $2650 and the registration limit capped at 35 universities.
The competition will operate a waitlist. Competitions must sell out before waitlist are activated. Teams who end up registered on the waitlist must meet all document deadlines to stay active. Teams will have 24 hours to accept an offer to graduate to the registered teams list if opportunity arises. Teams must graduate off the waitlist one month prior to the competition start date to participate.
SAE has published the 2023 Collegiate Design Series schedule is online. Locations and dates below are tentative.

Registration for the 2023 Formula Hybrid + Electric Event will be held Thursday, September 22, 2022, on sae.org at 10:00 AM ET. Stay tuned to the news feed at https://www.fsaeonline.com/cdsweb/app/news.aspx and the mobile app for regular updates and more information.
Please be sure to download the most updated version of the Rules for 2023, found here, and a note on the revision from our Chief Electrical Inspector below.
"We revised the rules for 2023 with the intent of simplifying battery capacity calculations. In particular, we now allow simple “nominal” voltage and AH ratings for calculating capacity. We also removed the lead-acid era capacity calculations that used the Peukert equation.
A part of that simplification was the removal of the 80% “usable capacity” factor. This had the inadvertent consequence of reducing the allowable pack size from 6.75 kWh to 5.4 kWh. We have revised the Rules for 2023 to allow the 80% factor."
Registration will open on September 19th and will be open to all Hybrid and Battery Electric entrants. Teams will be able to register at the SAE Collegiate Design Series site found here, and the SAE will update this page with registration details closer to the opening day.
Be sure to check here for the most updated announcements and reach out to us if you have any questions.
See you on track in May 20231
