2011 Formula Hybrid Competition

Dartmouth's 5th annual Formula Hybrid Competition took place last month at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway with 21teams (out of 34 registered) competing. Founded and run by Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, the competition features high-performance hybrid and electric race cars built by teams of undergraduate and graduate engineering students. The enthusiasm, camaraderie, and love of learning through this experience was as strong as ever this year, despite difficulties teams had getting through tech/safety inspections.

Day one of the competition was devoted to electrical and mechanical technical inspections of the vehicles. Many teams found the technical inspections challenging this year, which meant their ability to compete on the track was limited. Design and marketing presentation events were held on day two. These events provide an opportunity for teams to explain in detail their innovative approaches to design and how they would market their car to potential investors. Day three featured the beginning of the dynamic events: acceleration runs, the autocross. The fourth day consisted of the endurance event where teams are provided an energy allotment of only 20 Megajoules with which to complete the 22k timed event. This was followed by the awards ceremony (see placement below).

Indianapolis 500 – Emerging Tech Day

Directly following the Formula Hybrid event, on May 7, 2011, six teams caravanned out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Formula Hybrid was invited to headline as engineering innovators in the "Emerging Tech Day" events. Emerging Tech Day was created by IMS to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first running of the Indy 500.

Formula Hybrid teams showcased their cars and ran a full day of autocross at IMS, enjoying almost unlimited access to the excellent course set up by the Indy Region of the SCCA. The six teams made a total of 95 runs around the 30-40 second course.

Winner of the Hybrid category was University of California Davis, and the Electric category winner was the Milwaukee School of Engineering. See the final results (PDF) and photos on Flickr.
